Peter, thanks for reading! IFRS refers to the International Financial Reporting Standards. These standards are a global set of high-quality standards that are being utilized, in some form, by the European Union, Canada, China, most of South America and many third world countries. Japan and India are in current discussions on how to incorporate IFRS into their financial reporting systems. The SEC has announced that the US will make a decision on how to incorporate IFRS in the US financial reporting system by the end of 2011. The IASB is the International Accounting Standards Board. This Board is the governing body over the International Standards. It is based in London and is comprised of 15 members from around the globe. If you would like further information, just let us know!

A good reminder of the need to consider the purpose of the valuation in considering a realistic range. One also needs to look beyond the simple EBITA multiple. Too often people take a simple EBITDA multiple without filtering it for the key value drivers in the company, or for the shape of the balance sheet i.e. is there any net surplus cash or debt on the balance sheet?

Thank you for your comment. Transferring partial ownership of an asset is still considered a gift. In some cases, partial or limited ownership may provide some “discounts” for gift valuation, so it should be considered as part of the overall wealth planning strategy, but it does not get around the gift tax laws completely.

Why not just make the children co-owners of the assets, and the asset would just pass to the joint owners?
